Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday launched the trial run of the Namo Yamuna Cruise Safari and inspected the proposed six-kilometre route between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, with the government aiming to begin public services before Chhath Puja.
During the inspection, Gupta directed officials to give priority to cleanliness, security and passenger convenience. She said the cruise would offer Delhi residents an opportunity to enjoy the Yamuna with their families and create a new recreational destination in the capital.
The initiative is also expected to boost tourism, support local businesses and generate employment opportunities, the Chief Minister said.
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra, who was present during the inspection, said the trial runs had begun and the boat had been launched into the river. He described the project as a joint effort involving the Central government, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi government and Delhi Tourism.
According to Mishra, each cruise ride is expected to last around 30 minutes, allowing visitors to experience the riverfront from the water.
Plans for the wider riverfront development include a musical fountain depicting the story of Maa Yamuna, water sports facilities, a food park and a dedicated zone for children.
Mishra also said the project had been developed in accordance with National Green Tribunal (NGT) standards and applicable environmental regulations.
The service is expected to be formally launched after the trial runs are completed. The proposed route between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur will cover approximately four to six kilometres. Officials said tickets would be available online through the Delhi Tourism website.
The project aims to add a new leisure attraction to the capital while encouraging residents and tourists to explore the Yamuna riverfront.
