Amid the controversy over a morphed video involving actress Janhvi Kapoor, actor Aamir Khan has shared his views on the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in filmmaking, saying the impact of the technology depends on how creators use it.
Speaking to the media, Aamir was asked how the film industry is responding to the rapid advancement of AI.
The Lagaan actor said new technology is naturally absorbed into cinema and can deliver positive results when used effectively.
“When a new technology comes, it is easily absorbed in films. Those who use it well get good results. Those who don’t use it well, don’t get positive reactions. So, it really depends on how you use it. Technology is a technology. There is no life in it,” Aamir said.
He added that AI, like visual effects (VFX), has made it easier for filmmakers to bring ideas to the screen that were previously difficult to realise because of technological limitations.
“As far as a filmmaker, there was a time when you could not do what you had in your mind because the facilities and technology were not so advanced. Today, you can show whatever you can imagine. So, it is a tool which you should know how to use well,” he said.
Aamir’s comments come amid concerns over the misuse of AI following the circulation of a morphed video of Janhvi Kapoor linked to the Devara song Chuttamalle.
Actor Jr NTR, who starred alongside Kapoor in Devara, condemned the video and warned of legal action against those involved in creating and circulating it.
Calling the content “disgusting, sick and shameless”, Jr NTR said the use of AI to disrespect a woman in such a manner was “shameful beyond words”. He said he would pursue legal action against both those who created the morphed video and those spreading it.
The controversy has once again highlighted concerns surrounding the misuse of AI-generated and manipulated content in the entertainment industry.
