Canadian poet, classicist, author and academic Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for an innovative body of work that blends poetry, prose, fiction, nonfiction and translation while drawing extensively on classical literature.

The Swedish Academy announced that Carson, 76, was honoured “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”.

Carson becomes the third Canadian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature and the first from the country since Alice Munro won the award in 2013. She is also the fifth woman to receive the Literature Nobel in the past decade, following South Korean author Han Kang’s win in 2024.

With an academic background in classical Greek and Latin literature, Carson has built a distinctive literary career by translating, reinterpreting and modernising works by ancient writers including Aeschylus, Euripides, Homer, Sappho, Sophocles and Thucydides of ancient Greece, as well as Catullus of ancient Rome.

Her influences extend beyond antiquity to writers and thinkers such as Emily Bronte, John Keats, Franz Kafka and Virginia Woolf, along with philosophers Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Martin Heidegger.

Among Carson’s notable translations are Electra (2001), based on Sophocles’ play; If Not, Winter (2002), drawing on the poetry of Sappho; Grief Lessons (2006), featuring four tragedies by Euripides; and An Oresteia (2009), which brings together Aeschylus’ Agamemnon, Sophocles’ Electra and Euripides’ Orestes. She also translated Iphigenia Among the Taurians, Antigone and Bakkhai.

Carson’s first published work, Eros the Bittersweet: An Essay (1986), developed from her doctoral thesis and examined the concept of eros in ancient Greek literature. The work was later referenced in the debut episode of the American television drama The L Word.

Her other works include The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos (2001), which explores the emotional and erotic dimensions of a failed marriage and was dedicated to Keats, and Men in the Off Hours, a genre-defying collection featuring poems, verse essays, epitaphs, interviews, scripts and translations.

Carson’s work has also brought classical mythology into contemporary cultural settings. Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, a performance piece that debuted in New York in 2019, places Marilyn Monroe alongside the legendary Helen of Troy, drawing loosely on Euripides’ Helen.

Another notable work, The Trojan Women: A Comic (2021), adapts Euripides’ tragedy into comic-book form, portraying the fate of Hecuba, Andromache and Cassandra after the fall of Troy and exploring the enduring human cost of war on civilians.
