The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a Patwari and his alleged private agent for allegedly accepting a Rs 5,000 bribe for getting the mutation of a land parcel entered in revenue records in Jalandhar.
The accused have been identified as Patwari Vishavjeet Singh, posted at Patwar Circle, Basti Peerdad, Jalandhar, and private agent Rakesh Kumar alias Sonu.
According to a VB spokesperson, the arrests were made following a complaint lodged by a resident of New Rajan Nagar, Jalandhar.
The complainant told the VB that he had purchased a four-marla plot and got the sale deed registered in the name of his younger brother, Umesh Kumar, on December 23, 2024. He subsequently approached the concerned Patwari for mutation of the property, but alleged that the matter was repeatedly delayed.
On October 7, 2026, the complainant again approached Patwari Vishwadeep Singh regarding the mutation. The Patwari allegedly directed him to meet Rakesh Kumar alias Sonu, who allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 for getting the mutation entered in the revenue records.
The complainant initially paid Rs 1,500 to Rakesh Kumar, but the accused allegedly returned the amount and asked him to bring the full Rs 5,000 the following day. The complainant also recorded the conversation relating to the alleged demand for illegal gratification.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the VB Range Jalandhar. Following verification of the complaint, the bureau laid a trap and arrested both accused red-handed while they were allegedly accepting Rs 5,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against both accused at the VB Police Station, Jalandhar. Further investigation into the case is underway.
