Punjab Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker and Garhshankar MLA Jai Krishan Singh Rouri on Thursday inspected several grain markets in the constituency to review arrangements for paddy procurement and assured farmers that the state government was committed to purchasing every grain of their produce.
Rouri visited the grain markets at Rur Majara, Samundra, Panam, Garhshankar, Megowal, Mahilpur and Moranwali, where he interacted with farmers, commission agents and officials involved in the procurement process.
During the visits, he reviewed paddy arrivals, procurement and lifting, availability of gunny bags, payments and other facilities. He also sought feedback from farmers about difficulties they were facing and directed officials to ensure that no farmer faced unnecessary inconvenience while selling produce.
Rouri said the Punjab Government had made adequate arrangements for paddy procurement and that farmers’ convenience remained a priority. He warned that negligence or unnecessary delays in the procurement process would not be tolerated.
He stressed the need to expedite the lifting of procured paddy so that stocks do not accumulate in the markets and farmers can bring their next crop on time. He also sought daily updates from market officials and procurement agencies on procurement and lifting operations.
Rouri said Punjab’s farmers were the backbone of the state’s economy and played a crucial role in ensuring the country’s food security. He said it was the government’s responsibility to provide them with a smooth and hassle-free environment for selling their produce.
He also directed officials to ensure essential facilities such as drinking water, cleanliness, lighting and seating arrangements at the grain markets.
The Deputy Speaker appealed to farmers to bring dry and quality paddy conforming to government-prescribed standards so that procurement could be completed efficiently. He said he was personally monitoring arrangements in the markets to prevent unnecessary difficulties or harassment for farmers.
Rouri directed officials to resolve farmers’ complaints on priority and called for close coordination among the administration, procurement agencies and other stakeholders during the procurement season.
Farmers present at the markets also shared their views and feedback regarding the arrangements. Rouri assured them that the Punjab Government was taking all necessary steps to safeguard their interests and ensure a smooth procurement process.
Those present included constituency organisational in-charge Charanjit Singh Channi, Market Committee Chairman Baldeep Saini, Block President Jagtar Kitna, officials concerned, market committee employees, commission agents, farmers and other prominent personalities.
