Hyderabad, October 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Leaders of the Congress and other INDIA bloc constituents were detained in Hyderabad on Thursday while attempting to march towards Lok Bhavan, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Telangana Congress president Mahesh Kumar Goud, MLC Kodandaram, CPI MLA and state secretary Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao, and CPI-M state secretary John Wesley were among those detained after protesters attempted to cross a police barricade and proceed towards Lok Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor.
Several Telangana ministers, along with leaders and workers of the Congress, CPI, CPI-M and other parties, participated in the ‘Save Democracy’ march.
Ministers Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Ponnam Prabhakar, Sridhar Babu, Adluri Laxman Kumar, Vakati Srihari and Mohammed Azharuddin were among those who joined the protest.
The protesters assembled near the Indira Gandhi statue on Necklace Road and marched towards Lok Bhavan, carrying their respective party flags and raising slogans against the CEC and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Some banners displayed during the protest carried slogans including ‘Desh Drohi’, ‘Gyanesh, It’s done Bro’, ‘Vote Chor Gyanesh Kumar’ and ‘Impeach Gyanesh Kumar’.
Police stopped the rally at Khairatabad crossroads by erecting barricades on the road leading to Lok Bhavan. A large police contingent was deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
When protesters attempted to remove the barricades and continue towards Lok Bhavan, police detained several of them and took them away in vehicles.
Goud, who was among those detained, told the media that the protest was also aimed at condemning the action being taken by the Narendra Modi government against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and others protesting in Delhi.
He alleged that the government was indulging in “Vote Chori” and undermining constitutional institutions.
“This is a fascist approach. People will continue their protest to remove such fascist leaders from power,” Goud said.
Goud further alleged that after Bihar and West Bengal, Telangana was the next target of the BJP’s alleged “Vote Chori” campaign. He claimed that attempts were being made to delete 93 lakh names from Telangana’s electoral rolls, which he said had around 3.5 crore voters.
He also alleged that the BJP was carrying out the alleged “Vote Chori” exercise in Telangana in collusion with the BRS.
The allegations made by Goud are political claims and were not independently established in the report.
