The Congress-led Opposition on Thursday continued its protest against alleged discrepancies in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, with the agitation reaching Rajghat on its third day.
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge led the march to Rajghat, where hundreds of Opposition leaders and party workers gathered to intensify their protest and discuss the next course of action.
Earlier in the day, senior Congress and INDIA bloc leaders met for a luncheon in Connaught Place to discuss ways to escalate their campaign over what they have termed “vote chori”.
The Opposition has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the SIR exercise and the electoral roll revision process.
Speaking to reporters at Rajghat, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi reiterated the demand for Kumar’s resignation and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to listen to what the Opposition described as the voice of the people.
Earlier, after the luncheon meeting, Kharge alleged that the Opposition wanted to highlight concerns that the freedom secured by India’s freedom fighters was being “snatched” by the poll panel and that people’s “right to vote is being taken away”.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other Congress leaders have been participating in the protests in the national capital for the past three days. The Congress and its allies have accused the Election Commission of facilitating alleged “vote chori” and have pressed for the CEC’s resignation.
The Opposition has further alleged that the poll panel acted in concert with the BJP-led Union government in an alleged attempt to undermine democratic institutions and people’s voting rights. These are allegations made by the Opposition and have not been established as facts.
Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a fledgling outfit comprising students and activists, has announced a demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10 over concerns regarding alleged “vote theft” and electoral malpractices.
