New Delhi, October 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Air India and Air India Express have announced higher fuel surcharges on domestic and select international flights, increasing the cost of air travel for passengers amid rising Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices and continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The Tata Group airlines have followed IndiGo, which had earlier revised its fuel charges for new bookings amid a sharp increase in ATF prices.

Air India and Air India Express said ATF prices have remained volatile in recent months due to geopolitical developments and sustained pressure on global energy markets. The latest increase has raised airline operating costs, with fuel accounting for a substantial portion of overall expenditure.

For Air India Express, the revised surcharge will apply to new bookings made from 12 midnight IST on October 9. For Air India, the revised charges will apply to bookings made from 11 a.m. IST on October 9. The surcharge will vary according to the sector and route category.

For domestic flights, the one-way fuel surcharge has been revised to Rs 400 for journeys up to 500 km. Flights covering 501-1,000 km will attract a Rs 600 surcharge, while journeys between 1,001 and 1,500 km will carry a surcharge of Rs 850.

Flights covering 1,501-2,000 km and those exceeding 2,000 km will attract a fuel surcharge of Rs 1,200.

The airlines have also revised fuel surcharges on select international routes. The surcharge has been fixed at $215 for North America, $210 for Australia, $135 for Europe, including the UK, and $55 for West Asia and the Middle East.

Earlier, IndiGo had revised fuel charges for all new bookings made from 12:01 a.m. on October 6, citing a sharp increase in ATF prices.

IndiGo said the latest month-on-month increase in fuel prices had exceeded 14 per cent, taking ATF costs to among their highest levels in the past decade.

Under IndiGo’s revised domestic charges, passengers travelling up to 500 km pay Rs 375, while flights covering 501-1,000 km attract Rs 600. The surcharge is Rs 900 for journeys of 1,001-1,500 km, Rs 1,150 for 1,501-2,000 km and Rs 1,300 for flights exceeding 2,000 km.

For international flights, IndiGo has fixed fuel charges based on route and distance. Flights within the SAARC region attract Rs 1,000 for routes up to 500 km and Rs 3,000 for routes of 501 km and above. Flights to Southeast Asia, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Middle East, and North and East Asia carry a Rs 5,500 surcharge.

The surcharge for flights to Africa is Rs 6,000, while passengers travelling to Europe will pay Rs 10,000.

IndiGo said its revised charges were kept below the increase in its actual fuel costs to limit the impact on passengers.
