Two people were killed and seven others injured in a road accident on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, officials said on Thursday.
The accident occurred late Thursday when a vehicle carrying nine people towards Chunthan went out of the driver’s control and skidded off the road.
The deceased were identified as the driver, Vijay Singh, and Sunil Singh, 26.
Of the seven injured, one person was referred to Jammu for further treatment, while the remaining six were shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Anantnag.
Road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir are linked to a combination of human error, challenging terrain, vehicle-related issues and weather conditions, according to information cited from road transport and local traffic authorities.
Over-speeding, reckless driving, sudden manoeuvres and dangerous overtaking are among the major factors contributing to accidents, particularly on narrow mountain roads, sharp curves and hilly stretches.
Poor use of seat belts and helmets can further increase the severity of injuries, while overloading of passenger and commercial vehicles can affect stability and control on steep gradients. Drunk or impaired driving can also reduce reaction time and affect judgment.
The region’s difficult terrain, including narrow roads, sharp bends, rockfalls and identified accident-prone stretches, can compound driving risks. Adverse weather conditions such as rain, snowfall, fog and black ice can further reduce visibility and braking efficiency during certain seasons.
