A bomb threat email received by authorities at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata triggered brief panic on Thursday, following which the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) launched a thorough search of the airport premises.
According to sources, the threatening email was received by airport authorities in the afternoon and claimed that bombs had been placed at some locations inside the airport.
The authorities immediately alerted CISF personnel responsible for airport security, who began a comprehensive search of the premises.
Although the threat was initially suspected to be false, security agencies took no chances and carried out the search operation as a precautionary measure.
As per the latest information, CISF personnel have not found any suspicious object at the airport.
Efforts are underway to identify the person or persons behind the threatening email. Cyber experts have also been engaged to trace the source of the message.
The latest incident comes months after two separate bomb scares were reported at Kolkata Airport on the same day in February. In one case, a threatening note written in lipstick was found in the toilet of a flight, while another note discovered in the toilet of a different aircraft claimed that a bomb had been placed on board. Both threats were subsequently found to be hoaxes.
In another incident in February, several post offices and adjoining passport offices across different districts of West Bengal received bomb threat emails during working hours, prompting evacuations.
Extensive searches by police and bomb disposal teams in those cases also failed to find any explosives or suspicious objects.
