A woman in Kanpur has alleged that her husband pronounced triple talaq and forced her out of their home after 16 years of marriage, following which she approached the police seeking action against him.
The woman, identified as Afreen, said she has two teenage sons and alleged that her husband was involved in a relationship with another woman living in the same locality.
According to Afreen, she caught her husband with the woman on July 7. She alleged that the incident led to a confrontation involving relatives, during which her husband allegedly said he wanted to divorce her and marry the other woman.
Afreen also alleged that she had faced physical abuse and neglect during the marriage.
“He used to torment the children and me. He used to beat me up and did not provide for me. I was physically abused, but I persevered through it, thinking that it should not affect my family, my children,” she alleged.
She said her two sons are aged 13 and 15 and claimed that her husband’s family did not intervene despite being aware of the problems.
Afreen alleged that at around 9.30 p.m. on August 12, her husband pronounced triple talaq in front of their two sons and expelled her from the house.
She subsequently approached the Chaman Ganj police station. Police have registered an FIR under provisions relating to dowry harassment, assault, an alleged illicit relationship and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act.
Kanpur Central Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Srivastava confirmed that an FIR had been registered against the accused and said the investigation was underway.
Afreen had earlier alleged that police did not initially register her complaints and that the FIR was filed only in October. The DCP said mediation efforts were initially being attempted and that the FIR was registered after the issue of triple talaq came to light.
Afreen has now demanded the immediate arrest of her husband.
