Chandigarh, October 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Sanitary Inspector of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, in connection with an alleged bribery case, officials said on Thursday.

According to the agency, the case was registered on October 7 following allegations that the accused official had demanded Rs 14 lakh from a contractor for processing and clearing pending as well as future bills of the contractor’s firm.

The CBI alleged that the Sanitary Inspector had threatened to withhold the firm’s bills and get its tender cancelled if the bribe was not paid.

Based on the complaint, the agency laid a trap on Wednesday and allegedly caught the official red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 5 lakh as the first instalment of the total bribe.

The money was allegedly being paid by a contractor associated with the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation when CBI officials intervened and arrested the accused.

The agency said the Rs 5 lakh was part of the Rs 14 lakh allegedly demanded for processing and clearing the pending and future bills of the contractor’s firm.

Following the arrest, the CBI conducted searches at the accused official’s residential and office premises as part of the investigation.

During the searches, officials recovered incriminating documents along with documents related to immovable properties, the agency said.

The recovered material is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation into the bribery allegations.

The arrested Sanitary Inspector is scheduled to be produced before the competent court in Chandigarh later on Thursday.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
