Five armed and masked men allegedly robbed a Canara Bank branch in the Golmuri area of Jamshedpur on Thursday, fleeing with cash and gold pledged by customers as loan security, officials said.
The exact value of the stolen assets has not yet been officially disclosed by the bank or police. Initial reports, however, suggest that the loot could be worth several crores of rupees.
According to preliminary information, the assailants entered the branch carrying firearms and took employees and customers hostage at gunpoint before taking control of the premises.
The robbers allegedly collected cash from the counters and forced open lockers containing gold deposited by customers against loans. A bank employee who attempted to resist was reportedly assaulted with the butt of a revolver and suffered injuries.
After completing the robbery, the suspects fled the branch on foot, causing panic in the surrounding area.
Senior police officers and a large contingent of personnel reached the bank shortly after the incident was reported. Investigators have begun examining the crime scene, with forensic and fingerprint teams also collecting evidence from the premises.
Police are scrutinising CCTV footage from the bank and nearby establishments to identify the suspects and establish their escape route. Checking operations have also been intensified at various locations across Jamshedpur.
Multiple police teams have been formed to trace and apprehend the suspects, while raids are being conducted at locations where they are suspected to have taken shelter.
Meanwhile, the bank management is reconciling its cash and gold records to determine the precise extent of the loss. The final value of the stolen property is expected to be established after the assessment is completed.
The investigation is ongoing.
