The Rs 825-crore Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad’s Naranpura area is emerging as a multi-purpose sporting facility, offering athletes training and fitness infrastructure along with medical support and accommodation for players and coaches.
Spread over 1.19 lakh square metres, the complex has indoor and outdoor facilities for 18 sports, including swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, squash, shooting, wrestling and gymnastics.
Built with support from the Gujarat and Central governments, the facility was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 14 last year.
The complex has been designed to provide athletes with facilities for training, competition preparation and skill development. Athletes using the centre said its training and fitness infrastructure was helping them prepare for major competitions.
Swimming Federation of India General Secretary Monal Choksi described the aquatic facility as being of international standard.
“The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex has been built in the Naranpura area of Ahmedabad, and it also has an aquatic complex. If I speak on behalf of the Swimming Federation of India, the aquatic complex that has been built here is international-level sports infrastructure,” Choksi said.
The facility also includes accommodation for athletes and coaches and medical facilities, allowing players to access several support services within the complex.
Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said the complex was currently functioning for 10 sporting events and had good sports and coaching facilities.
“Overall, the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex is currently functioning very well for 10 sports events. The sports facilities and coaching facilities available here are very good,” Pani said.
The complex has seven entry gates, seating capacity for thousands of spectators and parking space for around 900 vehicles.
Beyond providing training infrastructure, the facility is intended to strengthen Ahmedabad’s ability to host national and international sporting competitions. Its facilities are also being viewed in the context of the city’s plans and aspirations to host major sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the proposed 2036 Olympics.
With sports facilities spread across indoor and outdoor venues and complemented by accommodation, medical services and other supporting infrastructure, the complex is positioned as a broader sporting hub rather than merely a competition venue.
