More than 100 architecture students from institutions across different states participated in a day-long hands-on mud workshop, ‘HAATH’, organised at the GZS School of Architecture and Planning, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda.
The workshop was organised by the local unit of the National Association of Students of Architecture (NASA India) under NEXUS and facilitated by architect and ecological practitioner Vishesh, whose work focuses on permaculture, natural building and ecological restoration.
The event combined theoretical sessions with practical learning on earth-based construction techniques. Students were introduced to geology, climate, vegetation, settlement patterns and local material culture before undertaking observation and testing of locally available soil and natural materials.
The participants also experimented with the preparation and mixing of earth-based materials and took part in collective cob construction, mud sculpting and finishing techniques.
As part of the practical exercise, the students created a mud-based seating space and landscape element on the university campus, demonstrating the application of natural building techniques while improving the usability of an open campus area.
Students and delegates from Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology, Murthal; Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar; CT Group of Institutions, Jalandhar; Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana; The Hindu College of Design, Architecture & Planning (HICDAP), Sonepat; and Indo Global College, Chandigarh participated in the workshop.
The organising team included Unit Secretary Devansh Chawla and Unit Designee Deepam Goyal under the guidance of Faculty Advisor Ar. Kapil Arora, with Ar. Nehdeep Kaur serving as Co-faculty. Ar. Kapil Arora has been associated with NASA-related co-curricular activities at MRSPTU for nearly three decades, with university students earning recognition at various platforms.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Sharma highlighted the importance of practical exposure in preparing students for professional careers and said the workshop demonstrated the potential of students when supported by dedicated faculty.
University Registrar Dr. Paramjit Singh and Dr. Ripu Daman Singh, Head of Department, appreciated the organising team and participants and congratulated them on successfully conducting the workshop.
