Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Chief Whip and MLA Baljinder Kaur on Wednesday questioned Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leaders Sukhbir Singh Badal and Harsimrat Kaur Badal over their silence on the controversy surrounding a Bahrain-based woman’s extended stay at an SGPC-run sarai in Sri Anandpur Sahib.
The controversy relates to an FIR registered against former SGPC member Amarjit Singh Chawla following the woman’s complaint. The SGPC has since constituted a four-member committee to examine the matter, while SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has said he had no prior information about the woman’s arrival or who brought her to the premises.
Baljinder Kaur said the SGPC is deeply connected with the religious sentiments of the Sikh community and questioned how the woman could remain at its sarai for such an extended period. She sought answers on who arranged her accommodation and expenses, provided a driver and allegedly extended special treatment to her.
She alleged that the Badal family had exercised considerable influence over the SGPC and asked Sukhbir Badal to explain who was responsible for the arrangements made for the woman and why her alleged grievances were not addressed when, according to her, she approached several Akali and SGPC leaders.
Baljinder Kaur also questioned Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s silence, referring to her public advocacy on issues concerning women. She asked why Harsimrat Badal had not commented on the matter despite the woman raising serious allegations.
“Who paid for her expenses? Who provided her accommodation? Who gave her VIP treatment? Who provided her a driver? Who was behind her and who was supporting her?” Baljinder Kaur asked.
She said the episode had raised questions about the functioning and accountability of Sikh institutions and demanded that Sukhbir Badal and Harsimrat Badal publicly clarify their positions. The AAP leader said the Sikh community deserved answers about how the woman was accommodated for such a long period and who was responsible for the arrangements.
