Akali Dal ‘Waris Punjab De’ on Wednesday announced the induction of former Enforcement Directorate (ED) Deputy Director Niranjan Singh and former Punjab Police DSP Balwinder Singh Sekhon into the party, in a move that marks an expansion of its political activities in Punjab.
The two former officials were formally inducted during a programme in Chandigarh by senior party leaders Bapu Tarsem Singh, Sardar Manpreet Singh Ayali and Bhai Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa.
Niranjan Singh has been associated with investigations into high-profile cases concerning drug trafficking and money laundering in Punjab. The party said he has also spoken publicly on issues relating to drugs, alleged money laundering and corruption during and after his service.
Balwinder Singh Sekhon, a former DSP of the Punjab Police, has also publicly raised issues concerning drug-related challenges in Punjab. He has additionally been associated with raising concerns over river water issues and water conservation.
Welcoming the two former officials, Bapu Tarsem Singh said their administrative experience and understanding of Punjab’s issues would contribute to the party’s organisational activities. He said the party’s membership was expanding with people from different fields joining its ranks.
Sardar Manpreet Singh Ayali said the organisation would focus on issues including Punjab’s youth, farmers, traders, water rights, state rights and the drug menace. He said the party would continue raising issues concerning state and minority rights and seeking accountability on matters including drugs and corruption.
Bhai Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa appealed to the Sangat, the Panth and the people of Punjab to join Akali Dal ‘Waris Punjab De’. He said accountable leadership was needed amid growing mistrust between people and governments and expressed concern over what he described as the erosion of institutions connected with the Panth.
Senior leaders present at the induction programme included Bhai Mandeep Singh, Bhai Jaskaran Singh Kahansingh Wala, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Agwan, Sardar Babu Singh Brar, Sardar Kabil Singh and Sardar Paramjit Singh Johal.
