Asian Games: Quimcy Dsouza storms into Teqball semifinals, moves within one win of medal

Indian debutante Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza advanced to the semifinals of the women’s singles Teqball event at the Asian Games 2026 after securing a straight-game victory over Cambodia’s Koemyean DY at the Nagoya City Higashi Sports Center on Friday.

Quimcy defeated Koemyean 12-9, 12-7 in her second Group A match to seal direct qualification for the semifinals. She had earlier edged Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto 10-11, 12-11, 13-11 in a closely fought opening match.

The Indian will next face Indonesia’s Ima Sumaya in the semifinal. A victory in that match will guarantee Quimcy a medal in her Asian Games debut.

Quimcy later teamed up with Mohamed Anas Imran Beg in the mixed doubles event, where the Indian pair opened their Group A campaign with a dominant win over the Philippines’ Jhoana Abulencia and Prince Agustin.

The Indian duo will next face Cambodia’s Bun Thuonvireak and Yorn Sophornraksmey before taking on Thailand’s Dejaron Phakpong and Wongkhamchan Suphawadi. They will conclude their group-stage campaign against Kuwait’s Alebraheen Salman and Alfailakaw Hessah.

Earlier, Indian men’s doubles pair Declan Marshall Gonsalves and Mohamed Anas Imran Beg became the first Indian athletes to compete at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games when they took the court on Thursday.

The pair, who are World Championships medallists, had won India’s first-ever medal in Teqball with a men’s doubles bronze at the 2024 World Championships in Vietnam. However, they lost both their Group A matches in Nagoya, going down 0-2 to Vietnam’s Truong Giang Ba and Anh Khoa Le before suffering another defeat against South Korea’s Junsuk Lee and Taebeen Lee.

Invented in Hungary, Teqball combines elements of football with a curved table and is broadly described as a blend of freestyle football and sepak takraw played on a table tennis-style curved surface.

Teqball is making its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya 2026, with five medal events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
