Mumbai, September 18, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Legendary actress Helen Mirren has opened up about her views on marriage and divorce, saying she has nothing against getting married but has “something against divorce”.

Speaking to actress Drew Barrymore on her chat show, Mirren recalled waiting until she was 38 to marry director Taylor Hackford, explaining that she wanted to be certain she was in a relationship that would stand the test of time.

During the conversation, Barrymore spoke about a friend trying to set her up with a man who had been divorced three times. Barrymore said she told her friend that she too had been divorced three times and reflected that she wished she had simply had relationships earlier in life.

Mirren jokingly suggested that Barrymore should have sought her advice sooner.

“Love them, give them all of that. Don’t get married. And not until it’s the right time, and I waited,” Mirren said.

The actress revealed that she married Hackford when she was 38 and noted that they remain married.

“And obviously we’re still married, but I waited that long. I said I don’t have anything against marriage particularly. I have something against divorce,” she said.

Mirren explained that she did not see the point of marrying unless she was confident about the longevity of the relationship.

“I don’t quite get the point in getting married. It might get divorced,” she said, adding that she eventually married after finding a relationship in which she knew they were “in it for the long haul”.

The video of the conversation was shared by The Drew Barrymore Show on Instagram with the caption, “@helenmirren on why she waited so long to get married.”

Mirren is regarded as one of Britain’s leading actors and has received numerous honours during her career, including an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, four BAFTA Awards, five Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, two Cannes Film Festival awards, a Volpi Cup and a Laurence Olivier Award.

She was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003.
