Hollywood star Tom Cruise has revealed that pop icon Taylor Swift “schooled” him on football when the two attended a Kansas City Chiefs game together, joking that the singer now knows the sport better than he does.
Cruise made the comments during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he was promoting his upcoming film Digger. The actor was asked about a viral photograph showing him and Swift talking at the game.
Asked what two of the world’s biggest stars might discuss when sitting together, Cruise replied that Swift was teaching him about football.
“She was schooling me on football. For real. Like, she was bringing the football; first of all, she’s a genius,” Cruise said, adding that he has followed Swift’s career since she was young.
Cruise said the experience of attending the game was particularly enjoyable because he had not been to a football match since before the Covid-19 pandemic due to his work commitments.
“Oh, she knows her stuff,” he said.
Fallon noted that Swift had previously said she knew little about football when she first met Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Cruise agreed, saying Swift “knew nothing about football” when she met Kelce and recalling her early questions about the sport and his experience playing against his brother.
He added that Kelce had been patient while Swift learned about football, but said that she has since become much more knowledgeable.
“But now she’s telling you what’s up and knowing the plays. She knows, she knows,” Cruise said.
The conversation also turned to topics beyond football. Cruise said he and Swift discuss music and movies and praised her sense of humour and songwriting ability.
“We talk about music and movies and she’s funny. She’s just, she’s got such a great sense of humor,” he said. “A brilliant writer also, by the way.”
