A man was allegedly stabbed to death during a dispute at a birthday party in Jammu after he smeared cake on the face of the birthday celebrant, police said on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Pawan Nair alias Sameer. According to police, he was brought to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu by his friends John Sotra, Gaurav Singh and Sugandh Bhatti after sustaining a serious neck injury. Doctors declared him brought dead.
Police said the incident took place on Thursday on a road near Lower Roop Nagar, where Neeraj alias Anshu was celebrating his birthday in the presence of his friends, including Nair, Sotra, Singh and Bhatti. Neeraj’s brother Rishu was also present.
During the cake-cutting, Nair allegedly smeared cake on Neeraj’s face, triggering a verbal altercation between the two. Despite attempts by others to pacify them, police said Neeraj pulled out a knife he was carrying and attacked Nair on the neck, causing a grievous injury.
Nair was immediately taken to GMC Jammu, where he was declared dead.
Acting on information from the hospital, a team from Janipur Police Station reached GMC Jammu and began an investigation. Police subsequently registered an FIR under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Both Neeraj and his brother Rishu have been apprehended and are in police custody, police said. Efforts are also underway to recover the weapon allegedly used in the crime.
The deceased’s body has been shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway.
“Jammu Police assures strict and time-bound action against the accused as per law,” the police statement said.
The incident came a day after a separate fatal shooting in Jammu’s Reshamgarh Colony, where 35-year-old Deepak Sharma, a newspaper hawker, was shot dead at his residence.
