BJP President Nitin Nabin on Thursday said the Narendra Modi government has consistently stood with the Sikh community during periods of historical injustice, persecution and crisis, while taking steps to honour its faith, heritage, sacrifices and contribution to the nation.
Addressing the Punjabi Gaurav Sammelan in Uttarakhand’s Rudrapur, Nabin began by recalling his association with Patna Sahib, describing Patna as his home and karmabhoomi. He said the sacred land associated with Guru Gobind Singh Ji provides members of the Sikh community with the strength and inspiration to serve the nation.
Nabin also paid respects to Nanakmatta Sahib, where Guru Nanak Dev Ji is believed to have visited during his third Udasi, along with Hemkund Sahib and Reetha Sahib.
Recalling the Partition of 1947, Nabin said Sikh families who settled in the Terai had left behind their homes, belongings and memories of their ancestors. He credited their hard work with transforming Udham Singh Nagar and the wider Terai region into the “granary of Uttarakhand”.
Referring to the difficult circumstances faced by Sikhs in Afghanistan, Nabin said the Central government had stood firmly with the community during the crisis. He also highlighted the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), saying it provided a pathway to citizenship for persecuted Hindu and Sikh communities arriving from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Nabin further spoke about the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, saying the perpetrators had not been brought to justice for decades. He credited Prime Minister Modi’s government with constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in 2015 to advance the process of justice.
He said the suffering of innocent Sikh families during that period would never be forgotten and that the BJP would continue to remember the painful chapter.
Highlighting the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, Nabin said devotees had for decades been able to view the revered shrine from a distance. He said Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the corridor on November 9, 2019, enabling pilgrims to visit the sacred site in Pakistan associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s later years.
Nabin also cited the declaration of December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas, saying it brought nationwide recognition to the sacrifices of the young Sahibzadas, Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh.
He highlighted the Rs 2,700-crore ropeway project to Hemkund Sahib, saying it would significantly ease the difficult pilgrimage and allow devotees to reach the shrine in around 45 minutes.
Paying tribute to the Sikh community’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle and the defence of the country, Nabin said its sacrifices deserved recognition alongside development initiatives.
He also praised the community’s spirit of brotherhood and said the way Sikh families in Patna Sahib support and progress alongside one another offered an example for society. He added that Nanakmatta Sahib continues to inspire people through the legacy of sacrifice and valour.
