Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday, ending uncertainty over his participation in the high-level meeting.
“At the invitation of Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi, President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13,” the ministry said in social media posts.
The confirmation came hours after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jia-kun declined to comment on Xi’s proposed India visit during a regular media briefing in Beijing.
Asked whether the Chinese President would travel to India for the BRICS leaders’ meeting, Guo said he had no information to provide on the matter.
Xi’s visit will be his first to India in nearly seven years and comes as New Delhi and Beijing work towards stabilising bilateral ties following the deadly Galwan clashes of 2020.
India has consistently maintained that peace and tranquillity along the India-China border are essential for the continued development of bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi are also expected to hold detailed bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The two leaders had a brief interaction during the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
The visit comes against the backdrop of renewed diplomatic and military-level engagement between the two countries. Following understandings reached between Indian and Chinese special representatives in August 2025 and August 2026, and subsequent discussions under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC), the first senior military commander-level flag meeting was held at Vacha on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on September 6 and at Damai on the Chinese side on September 7.
On August 25, National Security Advisor and India’s Special Representative for the India-China Boundary Question Ajit Doval stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in border areas during the 25th round of Special Representatives’ talks in Beijing.
Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also China’s Special Representative on the boundary question, held comprehensive and candid discussions on the border issue and bilateral relations.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two sides reviewed progress in implementing key understandings reached between Modi and Xi at Kazan in October 2024 and Tianjin in August 2025. They also welcomed the steady resumption of people-to-people and cross-border exchanges, including the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and border trade through three designated passes.
The two Special Representatives agreed to continue efforts towards a political settlement of the boundary question while keeping in view the broader and long-term interests of both countries, the MEA said.
