The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted conditional permission for a political meeting of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Sreerampore in Hooghly district on Friday, while refusing permission for the proposed rally.
The political faction led by Mamata Banerjee had planned a public meeting at Sreerampore, followed by a rally from Mahesh to Sreerampore Court. After the police denied permission, the faction approached the High Court seeking approval for the programme.
The matter was heard by a single-judge Bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, who allowed the public meeting subject to several conditions.
The court fixed the meeting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and capped attendance at 2,000 people. It also directed that no provocative statements that could hurt religious sentiments be made during the programme.
However, the court declined permission for the proposed rally, accepting the police’s contention that a procession from Mahesh to Sreerampore Court could cause severe traffic congestion along the busy Grand Trunk Road.
Justice Bhattacharya directed the state administration to deploy adequate police personnel to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident during the meeting.
The organisers have also been directed to submit a list of volunteers, along with their phone numbers, to the police by 8 p.m. on Thursday.
The meeting will mark Mamata Banerjee’s first outdoor political programme in a district since the Assembly elections, in which the Trinamool Congress suffered a landslide defeat, according to the petition. Since the elections, her outdoor political activities had largely remained confined to Kolkata.
The Sreerampore programme is therefore being closely watched as her first major political gathering outside the state capital following the election setback.
