Ludhiana Lions leg-spinner Kartik Chadha has emerged as one of the standout performers in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League, but the 22-year-old believes his success is not the result of any sudden transformation. Instead, he credits consistent practice, self-belief and the ability to read batters for his strong run in the tournament.
Kartik currently leads the wickets chart after making a significant impact for the Lions. He said the confidence behind his performances was present from the opening game.
“I have been playing tournaments for the last two years. But this one is happening on a higher level. We have got a good platform. I am backing myself, and from day one, I am backing my strength,” Kartik told IANS in an exclusive interaction.
He added that trusting his abilities and sticking to his process had helped him deliver against different teams and players.
Kartik has spent around four years working on developing greater consistency in his leg-spin. His experience as an IPL net bowler over the past two years has also helped him understand the demands of higher-level cricket.
“I practise bowling a lot. That’s the reason behind consistency. And the rest is all about confidence. And it is very important to believe in yourself in the end,” he said.
For Kartik, reading the batter is equally important. He assesses the match situation, identifies a batter’s strengths and watches where the player is looking to score before deciding his approach.
“The main thing is how you read the batter. The one who reads the batter well takes the upper edge,” he said.
He explained that once a batter walks in with the intention of attacking, a bowler must quickly understand the shots the player is attempting and adjust accordingly.
Kartik’s performances are even more notable given the challenges faced by leg-spinners, particularly in evening matches when dew can make the ball difficult to grip.
“A leg-spinner has to be bowled from the opposite hand. So it’s tough to bowl from the wrist, because consistency is required,” he said, adding that wet conditions can make the skill even more demanding.
Having played cricket for around eight years, Kartik believes the difficulty of mastering leg-spin is part of what makes the craft special.
“The art of leg spin is a little difficult. Because I have been playing for 8 years, I reached here,” he said, reflecting on the journey that has taken him to the current stage.
