Retired IAS officer S.C.L. Das on Thursday took oath as the Chairman of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), with Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood administering the oath of office and secrecy at his office.
Congratulating Das on assuming the new responsibility, Sood expressed confidence that his extensive administrative experience would strengthen the functioning of the power sector regulator in Delhi.
Sood said the Delhi Government accords the highest priority to transparency, accountability and protection of consumer interests in the power sector. He added that Das’s administrative expertise would help enhance the effectiveness of the DERC.
The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission plays a key role in regulating the power sector in the national capital, safeguarding consumer interests and overseeing important matters related to electricity distribution.
The development comes amid several initiatives by the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi Government to expand access to renewable energy. Earlier, Sood announced that rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW would be installed at zero upfront cost for domestic consumers with average electricity consumption of up to 400 units in the financial year 2025-26.
Under the second amendment to the Delhi Solar Energy Policy, the government has sought to make rooftop solar adoption easier for households. Along with the Rs. 78,000 central subsidy under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the Delhi Government will provide an additional Rs. 78,000 capital subsidy.
The government will also provide a top-up subsidy to cover the difference between the available subsidies and the tendered cost of the solar plant, according to an official.
Consumers using up to 200 units of electricity will continue to receive the applicable subsidy after installing rooftop solar systems and will also be eligible for an energy-saving incentive against the electricity they save.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had said the initiative would strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s PM Surya Ghar scheme in Delhi while reducing the financial burden and simplifying the process of installing rooftop solar systems for ordinary households.
