Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Thursday expelled her nephew Akash Anand from the party, saying he was being “completely freed” from the organisation and alleging that his personal and family relationships appeared to have taken precedence over the interests of the party and his own political career.
Mayawati announced the decision while responding to the retirement from politics of Akash Anand’s father-in-law, former Rajya Sabha member Ashok Siddharth.
Siddharth, who was expelled from the BSP for the second time on August 2 over alleged anti-party activities, announced his retirement in a detailed social media post a day after Mayawati said such a step was necessary if Akash Anand was to be given another opportunity to rise within the party.
In a post on X, Mayawati described Siddharth’s retirement as a “right step taken very belatedly”. She said an earlier decision could have prevented what she described as adverse circumstances for the BSP, the Bahujan movement and Akash Anand, particularly as the party prepares for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Mayawati said the Ambedkarite political tradition followed by the BSP was founded on sacrifice, dedication, struggle and selflessness, with members expected to place the interests of the larger movement above personal and family considerations.
She questioned why Siddharth had not retired earlier if he genuinely had Akash Anand’s political future and the BSP’s interests at heart. According to Mayawati, the delayed decision indicated that Siddharth’s ambitions remained intact.
The BSP chief also criticised Akash Anand over his response to the developments, alleging that he had not reposted her relevant X post despite it being intended for his benefit. She said this reflected a greater emphasis on personal relationships than the party and its movement.
Mayawati said Akash Anand’s ability to effectively serve the organisation was questionable if he remained caught between personal ties and party interests.
She recalled that Akash Anand had already been relieved of his key organisational responsibility as National Convener on September 3. She said the party leadership had now decided to completely release him from the BSP with immediate effect.
“If Mr Akash Anand wishes to remain independent of the party, he is free to do so,” Mayawati said, effectively ending his association with the BSP.
She also called upon BSP workers to remain united against what she described as attempts by political opponents to use conciliation, inducement, coercion and division to weaken the party.
Mayawati urged party workers to devote themselves to the BSP’s political struggle and work towards securing an absolute majority, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. She said the party’s objective remained to establish an “Iron Rule” based on effective law and order and development while following the principle of “Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay” — welfare and happiness for all.
