US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 (Rs 4.75 lakh) payment to every adult American citizen if the Republican Party wins control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.
Trump announced what he called the “Trump dividend” while addressing a special midterm Republican National Committee convention in Dallas.
“Because of our tremendous economic success… I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said, making the payment conditional on Republicans winning both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
He said the money would have to be spent within the United States.
Trump used the address to put himself at the centre of the Republican campaign to retain control of Congress. Although his name will not appear on the midterm ballot, he urged voters to treat the election as if he were running.
“When I’m on the ticket, Republicans always do very well. We won the presidency three times,” Trump said, asking supporters to “pretend that I’m on the ballot” once more.
He warned that a Republican defeat would put issues including border security, tax cuts and public safety at risk.
Trump also pledged to campaign actively in the final weeks before the election, saying he would visit states with closely contested House and Senate races and hold rallies for Republican candidates.
During the address, Trump repeatedly warned supporters about what he described as the threat of communism in the US, saying, “We will defeat communism in America.”
Turning to Iran, Trump repeated his warning of possible further US military action and cautioned Tehran against pursuing a nuclear weapon.
“I would advise Iran not to get cute because we will have to hit them very hard,” he said, while asking supporters whether Iran should have a nuclear weapon.
Trump also floated a new name for neighbouring New Mexico, suggesting that the state should instead be called “New America”.
