US President Donald Trump has said he expects the war with Iran to end immediately after the US midterm elections, accusing Tehran of prolonging the conflict in an attempt to influence American voters.
Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One for Dallas on Wednesday, Trump said Iran was struggling to sustain the conflict and was seeking to influence the election by encouraging the emergence of what he described as a weaker US political leadership.
Trump said Iran’s objective was to acquire a nuclear weapon and warned that such a development would pose a threat to global security.
The President also linked the conflict to rising international oil prices, which have crossed $100 a barrel. He predicted that oil prices would fall sharply after the midterm elections and said he expected US gasoline prices to eventually drop below $2 a gallon.
Asked whether prices would decline before the November 3 midterm elections, Trump said he expected it to take longer.
Trump said the United States was not currently pursuing negotiations with Iran, although he left open the possibility of talks. He said he had initially wanted to reach an agreement but believed the situation had progressed too far for negotiations to be a priority.
Asked about a possible nuclear agreement, Trump said the US was pursuing objectives beyond the nuclear issue.
“I’m doing much more than a nuclear deal. There’s a lot more than nuclear,” he said, adding that other issues would now be on the table that were not under consideration three months earlier.
Trump also claimed that US forces had destroyed nine Iranian vessels, including tankers, during fighting around the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict has entered its seventh month, with renewed fighting around the strategic waterway contributing to a rise in benchmark Brent crude above $100 a barrel.
The US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3.
