The death toll from last week’s devastating floods in Nepal has crossed 1,000, with authorities continuing search and rescue operations as bodies recovered from rivers are being found in several affected districts.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said in its latest update that 1,003 bodies had been recovered so far. Southern Chitwan district recorded the highest number of recovered bodies at 321, followed by Nawalparasi East with 216.
According to the authority, 3,916 people, including 583 foreign nationals, remain out of contact. The missing include personnel from the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police, as well as other government employees.
As many as 639 people working at hydropower projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors have also remained out of contact since the disaster.
The NDRRMA said 279 people have been injured, while authorities continue compiling casualty details alongside search and identification efforts.
A total of 21,314 security personnel have been deployed for search, rescue and relief operations. The force includes 9,199 Nepali Army personnel, 7,912 from Nepal Police and 4,203 from the Armed Police Force.
Authorities said unidentified bodies have been placed at 21 locations for identification and appropriate management. Meanwhile, 11,884 people have been rescued so far, with security agencies using helicopters and other resources to reach stranded survivors.
The Nepali Army said rescue operations were continuing at several hydropower projects with assistance from foreign experts. Joint operations are underway at the Chilime, Langtang, Upper Trishuli-1 and Trishuli-3A hydropower projects, among others.
The Army said 279 people were rescued alive from hydropower project areas during the immediate response. They included two people from Rasuwagadhi, 33 from Upper Trishuli-1, 221 from Upper Trishuli-3A, two from Upper Trishuli-3B, nine from Mailung, four from Nuwakot Solar Power Project, three from Trishuli Hydropower Project and five from Devghat Hydropower Project.
