The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal’s Bhote Koshi River has risen to 177, while 826 people remain out of contact, authorities said on Thursday.
Nepal Police said the bodies of 177 people had been recovered by 10 a.m. from riverbanks across several downstream districts along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. The affected districts include Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun, Nawalparasi East and Nawalparasi West. Chitwan, in the southern plains, accounted for most of the recovered bodies.
The massive flood originated in China’s Tibetan region before sweeping through the transboundary Bhote Koshi River and causing extensive destruction in Nepal. Human settlements, hydropower projects, customs offices and electricity infrastructure were among the areas affected.
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah said the Nepali Army carried out a rescue operation in the early hours of Thursday in Timure, one of the worst-hit areas, evacuating 95 Nepali citizens and 21 Indian nationals to safety.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 826 people remained out of contact as of 11 a.m. Among them were 579 tourists, although the authority did not specify whether they were foreign or domestic tourists.
The missing also include 48 Nepali Army personnel, 28 Nepal Police personnel, 13 Armed Police Force personnel and 162 other people from Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shah travelled to flood-hit Bidur Municipality in Nuwakot district on Thursday morning for an on-site assessment of the devastation.
During the visit, Shah and the Infrastructure Development Minister are scheduled to assess damage to physical infrastructure and meet local administration officials, security personnel and elected representatives to review relief, rehabilitation and restoration of disrupted services.
The Prime Minister’s Office said Shah is also expected to issue directions for the rapid delivery of relief to affected areas and speed up reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.
