The BJP on Thursday stepped up its criticism of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after a group of Muslim women staged a protest outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, accusing the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha of practising vote-bank politics.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh said the protest had once again highlighted what he described as Gandhi’s political approach towards Muslim voters.
“Rahul Gandhi’s face has been exposed many times, and Muslim women have exposed him again. You saw it when he met the youth, and now Muslim women have done it. Rahul Gandhi does vote-bank politics,” Singh told reporters.
He also alleged that Gandhi and the Congress had remained silent on issues concerning Muslim women. Referring to the Shah Bano case, Singh questioned the Congress leadership’s position on the issue and accused the party of compromising on the rights of Muslim women.
BJP national spokesperson Guru Prakash also criticised Gandhi over his comments on patriarchy and questioned the Congress’ record on women in politics.
“Rahul Gandhi often talks about patriarchy. I want to ask him, which daughters are you talking about? You should know your history,” Guru Prakash said.
He referred to the Shah Bano case and raised questions about the treatment of Congress leaders and women politicians, including Kumari Selja and President Droupadi Murmu. He also referred to Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s remarks about Murmu and criticised the Congress over its treatment of Maneka Gandhi.
Uttar Pradesh Minister of State Dinesh Pratap Singh also attacked Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of attempting to tarnish India’s image. He said Muslim women were aware of the BJP government’s decision to abolish the practice of triple talaq.
The BJP leaders’ remarks came after Muslim women protested outside the Congress headquarters on Wednesday against the party and Rahul Gandhi.
One of the protesters told IANS that they wanted Gandhi to ensure equal respect and representation for Muslim women. She also questioned the absence of women ministers in the Congress-led Karnataka government and said Muslim women should also be included in political decision-making.
The protesters said they wanted Rahul Gandhi to understand their concerns regarding triple talaq and ensure greater participation of women, including Muslim women, in politics.
