Assam Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manasjyoti Chetia in Sivasagar and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, officials said on Thursday.
The SIT has been constituted by Sivasagar Police and is headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Lila Bora. The team has been tasked with examining the events leading up to Chetia’s death and the allegations raised in the complaint filed by the Bir Lachit Sena.
Chetia died on August 25, two days after an incident reported on August 23. He had been undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in the incident before succumbing to them.
Police have detained five people named in the complaint lodged by the Bir Lachit Sena in connection with the case.
The SIT comprises Lila Bora, Amguri Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mridul Hazarika, Nazira Police Station Second Officer SI (UB) Siraj Saikia and Nazira Police Station WSI (UB) Sumi Barman. Saikia has also been appointed as the investigating officer.
Investigators will examine available evidence, record statements and reconstruct the sequence of events preceding the August 23 incident. The team will also scrutinise the allegations made by the Bir Lachit Sena and establish the role, if any, of those detained in the case.
The probe will specifically seek to determine the circumstances in which the August 23 incident occurred and whether it was connected to Chetia’s death two days later.
Police will assess the evidence gathered during the investigation to determine whether the allegations in the complaint are substantiated and whether criminal liability arises from the incident.
Further action in the case will depend on the findings of the SIT and the evidence collected during the investigation.
