Actress Rakul Preet Singh has opened up about her decision to portray Surpanakha, Ravana’s sister, in the upcoming epic film Ramayana, saying the character offered her an opportunity to explore layers that are often overlooked in conventional portrayals.
Rakul said she was drawn to the possibility of presenting a more nuanced version of the character while remaining rooted in the original text.
“Every few years, you see a different interpretation and presentation of these characters, while keeping the essence rooted in the original text,” she said.
From an actor’s perspective, Rakul said, a character becomes exciting when it has multiple layers that can be explored on screen. She noted that Surpanakha is described as the most beautiful woman of Lanka and is also portrayed as having an ego and a complex personality.
“As an actor, it’s fun to explore those layers,” she said.
The actress added that the film’s script introduced her to several aspects of Surpanakha’s life that she had not previously encountered.
“There was a lot about her that I didn’t know. When I read the script, there was a lot about her life before and after that incident where her nose is chopped off by Lakshman,” Rakul said.
She said the script also explores what happens in Surpanakha’s life and how she encounters Ram, offering a broader perspective on the character.
“What happens in Surpanakha’s life and how does she meet, stumble upon Ram-there’s a lot which I didn’t know, which for me was new when I read the script, and which is why I liked it,” she added.
Ramayana features an ensemble cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Ravie Dubey, Yash and Sunny Deol.
Ramayana: Part 1 is scheduled to release in cinemas on November 6, 2026.
