Actress Niki Walia has opened up about her decision to continue taking supporting roles, saying such characters often reflect the people who play an important part in moving our lives forward.
Speaking exclusively to IANS, Niki said that while people may see themselves as the “hero” of their own lives, their journeys are shaped by family members, friends and other people around them. She believes films and television are increasingly recognising the importance of these characters.
“In real life, you feel that you are the hero of your life. If you understand the situation in terms of real life, you know that all the members of the family, your best friends, are the ones because of whom your life is moving forward,” she said.
Niki explained that supporting characters help underline the idea that a story cannot depend solely on its central protagonist.
“The car is running because of its four wheels,” she said, stressing the importance of giving other characters their due place in a narrative.
The actress also highlighted changes in the entertainment industry, particularly with the rise of OTT platforms, which she said has created greater opportunities for supporting actors to explore their potential and gain visibility.
Niki, who has played lead roles in 28 shows, said she now consciously takes up supporting parts because these characters mirror people audiences encounter in their everyday lives.
She said viewers can identify more closely with cousins, aunts, friends and other familiar figures than with the larger-than-life heroism often portrayed by protagonists.
Niki is best known for playing Dr. Simran Mathur in “Astitva…Ek Prem Kahani.” Her television credits also include “Sea Hawks,” “Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara” and “Puncch Beat,” among other shows.
