The Government Railway Police (GRP) Jammu has arrested a man accused in connection with the 1991 Jammu Railway Station blast after he remained absconding for 35 years, officials said on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as Altaf Hussain Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmed Sheikh and a resident of Marhama-Bijbehara in Anantnag district. He was booked under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) in connection with the case.
The blast took place on April 2, 1991, at Platform No. 1 of Jammu Railway Station. According to officials, three people, including two paramilitary personnel, were killed and 18 civilians were injured in the explosion.
An FIR was registered at GRP Jammu Police Station under Sections 307, 302 and 120(B) of the Ranbir Penal Code, Sections 3/4 of TADA and Sections 4/5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
During the investigation, one accused, Aman Ullah Khan, was arrested, while three others managed to evade arrest. The three were subsequently declared absconders by the court.
Officials said the GRP Jammu had intensified its efforts over the past two years to trace the remaining accused. The investigation team eventually located Sheikh, verified his identity and found that he had allegedly been living under a concealed identity for decades.
According to police, Sheikh had established himself as a businessman in the Bijbehara area while evading arrest.
After his arrest, Sheikh was produced before the TADA Court on Thursday for further legal proceedings.
Officials said the arrest followed sustained efforts to trace absconders wanted in militancy-related cases.
Several old terror-related cases in Jammu and Kashmir have been reopened and investigated in recent years. These include the 1990 killing of Kashmiri Pandit poet, journalist, research scholar, Gandhian, social reformer and independence activist Sarwanand Koul Premi and his young married son, Verinder.
The reopened cases also include the 1990 kidnapping, rape and killing of nurse Sarla Bhat in Srinagar.
