Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has summoned the Legislative Assembly to meet for its autumn session from September 21, 2026, following a recommendation from the Council of Ministers headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The Assembly has been summoned under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is a unicameral legislature with 95 directly elected members representing 95 constituencies. Its tenure is five years unless it is dissolved earlier.
The current, 13th Assembly was elected in September and October 2024. Before the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A and the subsequent reorganisation of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir had a bicameral legislature comprising a Legislative Council and a Legislative Assembly.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, passed by Parliament on August 5, 2019, replaced the earlier bicameral system with a unicameral legislature for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The ruling National Conference is the largest party in the Assembly with 41 members, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party with 29. The Congress has six members, while the Peoples Democratic Party has four. The CPI(M), Awami Ittehad Party, Aam Aadmi Party and Peoples Conference have one member each, while there are six Independents.
Senior National Conference leader and former minister Abdul Rahim Rather is the Speaker. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is the Leader of the House, while BJP leader Sunil Sharma is the Leader of the Opposition.
The Omar Abdullah-led government is supported by the Congress, CPI(M) and four Independents who have joined the National Conference.
The September session will be the Assembly’s next major sitting since its election in 2024.
