A Special CBI Court in Jaipur has sentenced a former Bank of Maharashtra branch manager and two private individuals to rigorous imprisonment in a bank fraud case involving fraudulent sanctioning of loans that caused an alleged loss of Rs 3.61 crore to the public sector lender.
The convicts are Ram Bharose Meena, then branch manager of the Bank of Maharashtra’s Gopalpura Bypass branch in Jaipur, and private individuals Deep Ram Meena and Veer Singh Meena.
The court sentenced Ram Bharose Meena to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2.60 lakh. Deep Ram Meena and Veer Singh Meena were each sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 25,000.
According to the CBI, the case was registered on November 9, 2016, following a complaint by the bank’s Jaipur Zonal Office. The agency alleged that Ram Bharose Meena conspired with the two private individuals and fraudulently sanctioned loans in 17 accounts between January 15 and May 6, 2015.
The loans were allegedly sanctioned without valid applications, supporting documents or adequate security. The accused were also alleged to have misused their positions and resorted to fraud and forgery to facilitate the disbursal of the loan amounts, causing a wrongful loss of about Rs 3.61 crore to the bank.
The CBI filed its chargesheet against the three accused on March 30, 2019. The court subsequently framed charges on December 1, 2021.
After considering the evidence presented during the trial and hearing arguments from both sides, the Special CBI Court found all three accused guilty on Wednesday and pronounced their sentences.
The verdict brings the case, which originated with the alleged fraudulent loan transactions at the Jaipur branch in 2015, to a conclusion after nearly a decade of investigation and judicial proceedings.
