The Kerala Police has expanded its special investigation team probing the alleged attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials who visited the rented residence of CPI-M leader and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in May.
The ED team had searched the residence on May 27. Vijayan’s daughter Veena Vijayan also lives there. The probe was linked to her IT company Exalogic and its dealings with Kochi-based mining firm CMRL.
The police have strengthened the investigation team by adding more Sub-Inspectors and Civil Police Officers, citing the seriousness of the case and the possibility of a wider conspiracy behind the alleged attack.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, the expanded team is preparing to question senior CPI-M leaders who were present at the site. Notices are expected to be issued next week to CPI-M state Secretary M.V. Govindan, Thiruvananthapuram district Secretary V. Joy and former minister V. Sivankutty.
Investigators are seeking to establish whether the confrontation was a spontaneous response by party workers or followed prior planning, mobilisation or instigation. The probe is also examining whether instructions or information were conveyed to those at the scene from elsewhere.
Cyber-forensic analysis of mobile phones and call records of senior CPI-M leaders is expected to form a key part of the investigation. Police are examining communications made shortly before and during the incident to establish the sequence of events and identify any possible coordination.
The case has already resulted in the arrest of several protesters. Twenty-five people remained in jail from the last week of May until early August. One person is currently in custody, while another accused remains absconding.
With the investigation now extending beyond those physically present at the scene, police are examining whether the alleged attack involved a coordinated effort rather than being limited to a confrontation between political workers and ED officials.
