The Assam government will verify the funds raised by 72 YouTubers from Assam and other states for flood relief and check whether the money has reached the state and how it has been utilised, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.
Sarma said the government appreciated content creators and individuals who had mobilised resources for flood-affected people, but stressed that proper accounting was essential to maintain transparency and avoid duplication of relief efforts.
“Seventy-two YouTubers have raised funds from outside the state. We are looking into whether the funds have reached the state or not,” the Chief Minister said.
He added that the government would seek details from those who collected donations regarding where and how the money was spent.
“Many have started contributing, but we will ask where they have utilised the funds. We will ask where it has been utilised so that there is no repetition,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister also praised Assam-based YouTuber and grassroots relief worker Samay Gogoi for his work in flood-hit areas.
“Samay Gogoi has done a good job,” Sarma said, adding that several other individuals had also stepped forward to support relief operations.
He said the government planned to acknowledge the contribution of YouTubers and others involved in relief work by honouring them with traditional Assamese gamosas, but added that the utilisation of funds would be verified first.
Sarma further said the Assam Police Cyber Cell was monitoring accounts linked to fundraising activities.
Gogoi has emerged as a grassroots relief worker during the floods, using his personal savings and mobilising resources to provide food, drinking water and medicines to people in affected and isolated villages. He has also been involved in rescuing stranded animals and rebuilding damaged houses through his initiative, Project Golden Assam.
The government’s decision comes amid increased private fundraising and volunteer-led relief efforts as floods continue to affect parts of Assam. The verification exercise is intended to improve coordination between government agencies and private relief groups while ensuring that assistance reaches affected communities without duplication or gaps.
