India strengthened their dominance at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship on Wednesday, winning three gold, one silver and one bronze medal on the third day of competition to take their overall medal tally to 29.
The Indian contingent now has eight gold, seven silver and 14 bronze medals across the championship, with the latest haul coming from the senior individual foil, epee and sabre events.
India began the day with a gold-silver finish in the senior women’s foil. Kanaglakshmi claimed the gold after a composed campaign, while compatriot Joys Ashitha secured silver. England’s Georgia Green and Emily Goodchild shared the bronze medals.
In the senior men’s epee, Rajendran Shanthimol Sherjin produced a strong performance to win India’s second gold of the day. South Africa’s Kruger Pieter took silver, while Wales’ Burkhardt Marc and South Africa’s Losevsky Sergey finished with bronze medals.
Singh Karan Singh then completed India’s gold-medal sweep in the senior men’s sabre, defeating Australia’s Shim Yoongi in the final. Shim settled for silver, while India’s Kumaresan Padma Gisho Nidhi and Nigeria’s Akinyosoye Oluwafolayemi took bronze.
With the championship concluding on Wednesday, India will look to add to its impressive medal haul in the remaining foil, epee and sabre events.
The Indian team will aim to carry its strong momentum into the final competitions and end its campaign in Lagos on a high.
