A political controversy erupted on Wednesday after a mobile phone was recovered from the barrack of former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, with the Congress questioning how a convicted rape accused could gain access to a prohibited device inside the high-security facility.
Revanna, who is serving a life sentence in connection with a rape and sex video case, was among the inmates whose barracks were searched during a six-hour operation by Central Crime Branch (CCB) officials. The recovery has raised fresh questions over prison security and allegations of preferential treatment for influential prisoners.
Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, son of JD(S) MLA H.D. Revanna and nephew of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
Congress leaders alleged that Revanna may have used political influence to obtain the phone and demanded strict action.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari told IANS, “His father is a former minister, and his grandfather was the Prime Minister of the country. They consider themselves to be above the law. The way he treated women, the more it is condemned, the less it is. Now that he is in jail, he is violating the law there as well. Strict action must certainly be taken against him.”
Congress MP Jebi Mather said the circumstances surrounding the recovery needed to be thoroughly investigated.
“What Prajwal Revanna has done, how he abused women or how he used women as an instrument, everything is on record. Now, what has happened in the jail is not acceptable. This needs to be seriously looked into: how it happened. Maybe political connections were used,” she said.
The raid reportedly resulted in the recovery of around 10 mobile phones, chargers and a pen drive from the barracks of several high-profile prisoners, including actor Darshan, Pavithra Gowda and Revanna.
The Android phone recovered from Revanna’s barrack was reportedly found hidden under his bed. The barrack was occupied by Revanna and another convict, Pratap Rai.
Following the recovery, Parappana Agrahara police registered an FIR and launched an investigation to determine how the prohibited device entered the prison and who was using it. Rai has been named accused No. 1 and Revanna accused No. 2 in the case.
The incident comes days after prison authorities conducted searches on August 6, when no mobile phone was reportedly recovered from Revanna’s possession. Officials are now investigating the source of the device and whether it was being used by Revanna or Rai.
