At least four people were killed and eight others rescued after a landslide struck houses in Ghatkopar’s Chirag Nagar amid heavy rain early Wednesday, officials said.
Rescue operations continued at the site as multiple agencies searched through the debris for anyone who may still be trapped.
The incident occurred around 3:48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Ghatkopar, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Fire Brigade. A portion of a hillock collapsed, sending soil and debris onto two to three houses in Ashok Nagar, Tekdi No. 3.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and reviewed the rescue and relief operations. She met affected families and expressed condolences to those who lost their relatives.
Tawde directed the agencies involved to intensify rescue efforts and ensure better coordination. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr Avinash Dhakne and other civic officials were also present.
The Mayor announced immediate financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the family of each person who died in the incident. An assistance of Rs 50,000 was also announced for each injured person to help meet medical expenses.
Officials initially feared that five to six people were trapped under the debris. A senior Mumbai Police official later said eight people had been rescued, of whom four were declared dead.
The narrow access road to the affected area has made rescue operations difficult. Personnel from the BMC, Mumbai Fire Brigade, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Mumbai Police, ambulance services and other agencies are working jointly at the site.
The landslide occurred as Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall, raising concerns over vulnerable settlements located near hill slopes and other areas prone to landslides.
Earlier reports had put the death toll at two, with four to five people feared trapped. The toll subsequently rose to four as the rescue operation progressed.
Authorities said the search and relief operations remain underway and the situation is being closely monitored.
