An unusual search for a missing pet parakeet has drawn attention on social media in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district, where a retired Army personnel has announced a reward of Rs 21,000 for anyone who helps reunite him with his beloved bird, ‘Gopi’.
Chandan Mishra, a resident of Sohagpur near the Banganga Mela ground, said the parakeet flew away on Saturday afternoon while family members were playing with it. The family initially announced a reward of Rs 11,000, which was increased to Rs 21,000 on Sunday after the bird could not be located.
In a video message circulated on social media, Mishra appealed to people to help find the bird, which he brought from Amarkantak in neighbouring Anuppur district about a year ago.
The green parakeet, affectionately called ‘Gopi’ and ‘Mitthu’, has a distinctive black ring around its neck and identifiable feathers on its back. Mishra said the bird is particularly friendly, imitates the voices of family members and can speak a few words.
The family has shared posters featuring the bird’s distinctive characteristics and sounds to help people identify it.
After Gopi disappeared, the family searched nearby rooftops, trees and surrounding areas but could not find any trace of the pet. Mishra said he was so distressed by the disappearance that he would observe a fast until the bird returned safely.
The family has also approached a local priest and plans to conduct a ‘havan-pujan’, or religious ritual, praying for Gopi’s safe return.
The emotional appeal and sizeable reward have attracted widespread attention online, with social-media users sharing the posters and video in the hope that someone spots the missing parakeet and helps reunite it with its owner.
