Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has approved a 78 per cent increase in the salary of contract and Job Trainee Medical Officers (Specialists), in a move aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare system and improving specialist availability in government institutions.
Following the revision, the monthly salary of these medical officers has been increased from Rs 33,660 to Rs 60,000.
The state government had earlier revised the salary of Job Trainee Medical Officers (Specialists) in 2022 after the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, increasing it from Rs 27,000 to Rs 33,660, an increase of around 24 per cent.
The latest hike is expected to encourage specialist doctors to continue serving in government healthcare institutions and ensure better medical services, particularly in remote and rural areas of Himachal Pradesh, according to a government statement.
The government said it has been working towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure so that residents can access quality treatment and modern medical facilities closer to their homes, reducing dependence on healthcare services outside the state.
As part of these efforts, the state government had earlier enhanced the stipends of postgraduate (PG) medical students in government medical colleges.
The monthly stipend for first-year PG students was increased from Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000, while second-year students received an increase from Rs 45,000 to Rs 60,000. The stipend for third-year PG students was raised from Rs 50,000 to Rs 65,000.
The government said PG medical students play an important role in patient care along with their academic responsibilities, and the enhanced stipends would encourage them to provide improved healthcare services.
The state government has also increased the stipends of Senior Residents and other specialist doctors working in medical colleges, raising them by 50 per cent to 170 per cent.
The monthly stipend of Senior Residents and Tutor Specialists has been increased from Rs 60,000-Rs 65,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The stipend for Super Specialists and Senior Residents (Super Specialists) has been raised from Rs 60,000-Rs 65,000 to Rs 1.30 lakh.
The government said these measures are aimed at retaining skilled medical professionals and improving the overall healthcare delivery system in the state.
