Tripura CM Honours Commonwealth Judo Gold Medallist Asmita Dey for Historic Feat

Agartala, August 5, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday felicitated judoka Asmita Dey for creating history by winning India’s first-ever gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games, describing her achievement as a proud moment for both the state and the country.

The 23-year-old athlete secured the women’s 48kg judo title at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach 2-1 through a dramatic Golden Score finish, becoming the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth gold medal.

During a meeting with Asmita at Tripura Bhawan in New Delhi, Saha congratulated the champion athlete and praised her determination, discipline, hard work and commitment to the sport.

The Chief Minister said Asmita’s historic performance had brought immense pride to Tripura and India, while proving that the northeastern state has the potential to produce world-class sporting talent.

“Asmita Dey’s historic achievement on the international stage is a landmark moment for Indian sports and a matter of immense pride for Tripura. Her dedication, determination and sporting excellence have made the entire state and the country proud,” Saha said.

Born on March 22, 2003, in Belonia, South Tripura district, Asmita comes from a modest background. She is the daughter of Arjun Kumar Dey, who runs a bicycle repair shop. She initially participated in the 800 metres before a coach identified her potential and introduced her to judo. Her father passed away a few years ago.

Saha said Asmita’s journey from Tripura to the international podium reflects the importance of perseverance and commitment and would inspire young athletes across the country.

“Her journey from Tripura to the top of the international podium will serve as a powerful inspiration to millions of young and aspiring athletes,” he said.

The Chief Minister assured the gold medallist that the state government would continue to extend support and encouragement to help her achieve greater success in future competitions.

Reaffirming Tripura’s focus on sports development, Saha said the government was working to strengthen sports infrastructure, identify emerging talent and create better opportunities for athletes to compete at national and international levels.
