Moderate rainfall lashed Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning, providing much-needed relief from humid weather conditions, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast widespread monsoon activity across several parts of the country.
The weather department said active monsoon conditions are likely to continue over the next 24 hours, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in several regions across north, east, west and south India.
For Delhi and adjoining areas, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with the possibility of heavy showers during the day. However, no weather alert has been issued for the national capital region.
The IMD has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, Odisha, Kerala, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Gangetic West Bengal. Heavy rainfall is also likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Tamil Nadu.
According to the IMD, the monsoon trough extending from Sri Ganganagar to Mizoram through Rohtak, Shahjahanpur, Sultanpur, Gaya and Bankura is supporting widespread rainfall activity in several areas.
The department said active monsoon conditions, along with cyclonic circulations over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and northeastern states, and the influence of a western disturbance, are expected to further intensify rainfall during the coming hours.
In Uttar Pradesh, a yellow alert has been issued for 20 districts in the western region, with scattered rainfall expected across the state on Friday.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand has been receiving continuous heavy rainfall since Wednesday, resulting in rising water levels in rivers and streams across several districts. Authorities have also warned of an increased risk of landslides in hilly areas.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for several Uttarakhand districts, including Dehradun, and advised residents and authorities to remain cautious amid the prevailing weather conditions.
