Six members of a family were killed and another person injured after a nearly 100-year-old house collapsed amid heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident took place in the Mahuli locality under the Kotwali police station area, where all seven family members were sleeping in the same room when the structure suddenly collapsed, trapping them under the debris.
Police and rescue teams immediately rushed to the spot after receiving information and launched a rescue operation. The victims were pulled out from the rubble and taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared six members dead. One survivor was rescued alive and is undergoing treatment.
The deceased include a couple, their son, daughter-in-law and two children.
Recalling the incident, survivor Aman Srivastava said he woke up to find himself trapped under the debris and managed to escape before trying to rescue his family members.
“When I woke up, I realised I was buried under the debris. I somehow managed to get out and saw that all my family members were trapped. I tried to rescue them but could not, so I started shouting for help,” he said.
Aman said all seven family members were sleeping in the same room, including his parents, younger brother, wife and two children. “I was rescued, but they all died,” he added.
Neighbour Poonam Srivastava said the roof of the upper floor collapsed suddenly, causing the debris to fall onto the lower floor where the family was sleeping.
“Seven members of the family were inside the house. One person was rescued alive, while six others, including two children, died,” she said.
Circle Officer Ashutosh Mishra said Kotwali Police Station received information about the collapse around 2 a.m., following which police and fire brigade teams reached the site.
“The teams removed the debris and shifted all the victims to the district hospital, where doctors declared six of them dead,” he said.
Rescue operations have been completed, while police have begun an investigation into the incident.
