Tamil Nadu Continues to Lead India in Deceased Organ Donation, Says Minister K.G. Arun Raj

Coimbatore, August 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Tamil Nadu continues to lead the country in deceased organ donation, contributing nearly one-third of all organ donations in India, State Minister K.G. Arun Raj said on Sunday while reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability in the organ transplantation system.

Speaking after attending the “Life After Life” organ donor appreciation ceremony in Coimbatore, the Minister said the state would take stringent action against any hospital, institution or organisation found involved in irregularities related to organ donation or transplantation.

In a post on X following the event, Arun Raj described the inauguration of the “Wall of Honour” dedicated to organ donors as an emotional moment, saying it paid tribute to individuals whose final act of generosity had given others a new chance at life.

He also shared that the occasion reminded him of a similar personal loss experienced by his own family, making the ceremony particularly meaningful.

The Minister said the state government had introduced stricter safeguards in the organ transplantation system following the kidney theft scandal. While procedural reforms have since been undertaken to improve efficiency, he stressed that easing administrative processes does not mean compromising oversight.

Arun Raj warned that any violations of established norms would invite the strictest action, underscoring the government’s resolve to protect the integrity of the transplantation programme.

He said public confidence remains central to the success of organ donation initiatives, as the programme depends on the willingness of grieving families to consent to organ donation during moments of profound loss.

Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s achievements, the Minister said the state has consistently remained at the forefront of deceased organ donation in India. He credited donor families for their selfless decisions, noting that their contributions have helped save and transform countless lives.

The “Life After Life” programme was organised to honour organ donors and their families while promoting greater public awareness about the life-saving importance of organ donation.
