India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has expressed confidence in young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s potential, describing him as a quiet and charming personality off the field but a destructive performer on it. Iyer believes the teenager has the ability to dominate Indian cricket when given the opportunity.
Speaking ahead of India’s five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Iyer said he has made a conscious effort to build a personal connection with Sooryavanshi by discussing his life beyond cricket.
Iyer noted that while most people interact with the youngster about his cricketing abilities, he prefers to learn about his lifestyle, family and interests outside the game.
“I keep interacting with Vaibhav in terms of what he does outside the field, because everyone talks to him about cricket, and we know how talented and gifted as an individual he is. So, just to talk about his lifestyle outside, that interaction, knowing about his family, what he does, what not, excites him more because he’s more of himself when he talks about it,” Iyer told JioStar.

Describing Sooryavanshi’s contrasting personality, the India captain said, “A very silent guy, but on the field, very destructive. So, that’s like an irony when you look at him. He’s a very charming, sweet guy to interact with and good to have him around the dressing room.”
Iyer also stressed that there was no need to rush the youngster into a bigger role, pointing to the presence of India’s established, World Cup-winning openers in the team.
“He’s still in the 15. So definitely, when his time comes, he is going to dominate Indian cricket,” Iyer said, expressing confidence that Sooryavanshi would make the most of his opportunities.
The teenager remains part of India’s squad as the team continues its preparations for the next T20 World Cup. Iyer’s remarks underline the team’s confidence in Sooryavanshi’s abilities while allowing him time to develop at the international level.
India will now turn its attention to the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, with Iyer looking to build on the momentum of the team’s Asian Games gold medal-winning campaign.
